FDTD Dispersion Revisited: Faster-Than-Light Propagation - IEEE Microwave and Guided Wave Letters

چکیده
The numerical dispersion relation that governs the propagation of fields in a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) grid was derived several years ago. In this letter a different interpretation is given for the governing equation. It is shown that the dispersion relation predicts faster-than-light propagation for coarsely resolved fields. Additionally, some spectral components that were previously believed to have zero phase velocity are shown to propagate, albeit with exponential decay.

متن کاملStudy of the Parameters Affecting Cylindrical Cloak Using Dispersive FDTD
In this paper, an ideal cylindrical metamaterial invisibility cloak with infinite-length which its electric permittivity and magnetic permeability mapped to the Drude dispersion model is simulated. The sinusoidal plane waves with microwave frequencies used as sources. To this end, the dispersive finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) used with Convolutional Perfectly Matched Layered (CPML)...
متن کاملAn analysis of millimetre-wave interferometry on Hall thruster plumes by finite difference time domain simulations
In this paper, we present finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations of millimetre-wave propagation through the near-field plasma plume of low power Hall thrusters. The simulations are intended to address potential issues (collisions, magnetic fields) that may affect the validity of simple theory used for phase shift determination in the recent measurements of plasma density using microwa...
متن کاملFrequency dependent steering with backward leaky waves via photonic crystal interface layer.
A Photonic Crystal (PC) with a surface defect layer (made of dimers) is studied in the microwave regime. The dispersion diagram is obtained with the Plane Wave Expansion Method. The dispersion diagram reveals that the dimer-layer supports a surface mode with negative slope. Two facts are noted: First, a guided (bounded) wave is present, propagating along the surface of the dimer-layer. Second, ...
متن کاملReduction of Numerical Dispersion in FDTD Method Through Artificial Anisotropy - Microwave Theory and Techniques, IEEE Transactions on
In this paper, a simple and computationally low-cost modification of the standard finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm is presented to reduce numerical dispersion in the algorithm. Both twoand three-dimensional cases are considered. It is shown that the maximum error in phase velocity can be reduced by a factor of 2–7, depending on the shape of the FDTD cell. Although the reduction pr...
